CV Writing 101

We’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to CVs. To do our part to help the UK workforce CRG TEC’s Senior Recruitment Consultant, Alex, shares her basic tips to get your CV up to scratch and get those interviews rolling in.

Contact details

It sounds so obvious but making sure your contact details are visible and up to date is the first step to getting more responses for your jobs. I don’t know how many times I’ve tried a number on a CV for it to be out of service or emailed someone and had a bounce back because the account is no longer active.

Wherever possible put a personal mobile number on your CV, work numbers obviously expire as soon as you leave that role and as most people aren’t home throughout the day land lines are notoriously bad for getting hold of people.

Again, no rocket science here, but your CV has to be easily readable. That’s not to say the content should be dumbed down in any way, this is simply about using document writing formatting correctly. The font you use should be clear and simple (if using MS Word either Arial or Times New Roman are always safe bets) and of a legible size, I’d recommend size 11 or 12.

If you’re concerned the writing looks a little cramped changing the line spacing to 1.5 should sort this out.

No “one size fits all” solution here, bigger isn’t always better and the proscribed 2 sides of A4 can be too brief when trying to cover a 20 year career. The best I can say is to use your judgement, ensure you hit the key points of your roles and achievements for every relevant position but don’t write an essay. As a general rule of thumb (and a broad one at that) anything over 4 pages may need trimming.

If you are struggling for space I’d direct you back to formatting again as this can save you acres of space. Consider putting your contact details in the footer of every page instead of at the top of your first and use a straight forward:

Job Title | Company | Dates of employment

lay out for that information on each role instead of using 3 lines.

A clear lay out

There are hundreds of articles written about how exactly to lay out your CV but, provided the sections are clearly labelled and writing well laid out, a Recruitment Consultant or hiring manager will be able to read through it easily. If really pushed I’d us the following lay out as a generic pattern:

Personal Profile

Key Skills

Employment History

Additional Information (this can include driving licence, languages spoken, IT skills etc.)

Make it personal! Your CV is your calling card, your advert to your future employer so you need to sell yourself and the best way to do that is to be yourself. In your profile try to steer clear of clichés like “can work well on my own and as part of a team” and instead describe you, what you like and what you do, for example “whilst I current hold a standalone position I do seize opportunities to work on collaborative projects with colleagues across the business”.

When describing job roles think about why you’re in the company, the function you serve and how you do that well, avoid simply copying the job description you were given when you started and let your personality come through.

To really make it individual for relevant roles add a few achievements, things that you specifically have done to make a positive impact in the company. Good examples include things like increasing turnover, improving efficiencies, mentoring other members of staff or even implementing Charity Tuesdays once a month.

Always include a couple of quick lines about your hobbies and interests outside of work. You’re not an automaton who only exists to work so show your new employer that. They may not share your love of Star Wars Reenactment Festivals or Nordic nose whistling (worth pointing out I don’t know if either of these are a thing) but it’s going to be a great way to break the ice in an interview.

Don’t lie.

At some point you’ll get caught out.

Hope that helps in some way. I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel here but from a basics starting point this is help you get going.

I was in a very good role but looking to move on. I knew what I wanted from a new position and had the bar quite high. I had several positions on the go but none of them were looking up to the challenge in terms of location, tech or type of workplace but Deborah managed to jump my high bar.
From the start to the end of the process Alex took the time to get to know me, understand what I was looking for and help me secure my new role. She was professional and honest, knew her client inside out, took the time to answer all my questions and thoroughly prepare me for interviews. Even after I started in my new job she’s kept in touch to make sure I settled in the role.
Dealing with Stephen I knew straight away he was interested in my career and how the role presented to me would help further myself professionally. Stephen got in touch with myself regarding a role at a Software Support Company having found my CV online. Over the years I've dealt with a wide variety of recruitment companies and you tend to think they're all the same, however the level of service I received from Stephen and CRG TEC was second to none. The entire service was thorough and professional.

Alex contacted me when I was starting to get close to the end of my previous contract with an opportunity that has turned out to tick all of the boxes. She was very informative and knowledgeable about the role and guided me through the interview process and unlike some other recruiters I have come across she seemed to have actually done her homework and made sure the role was relevant to my skill set.
After feeling like a battery hen with many so-called recruitment firms, Neil was a breath of fresh air. I couldn’t recommend Neil any higher, a truly professional and personal service.
I worked with Stephen and CRG TEC as a candidate for a role I am currently working within. He offered me a lot of tips and information required to be successful in my interview and his professionalism was highly exceptional. I’ve dealt with a lot of recruiters in the past but took note of his genuineness, not only in my career but also my personality. He is a resourceful individual would highly recommend anytime.
Deborah has been so dedicated throughout the hiring period for our two developer roles. She's in constant communication with me, doesn't push us, but keeps us informed at all times. It's taken us some time to get the candidate we want, specifically for our needs and Deborah has been super patient with us at times. I'm glad to have someone who has provided that main point of contact for the whole cycle.
Alex has been awesome in guiding me through successfully gaining my next role in FM. It's been a particularly challenging adventure due to a relocation as well as a period of time when I was out of the country. Alex took it all in her stride and made me feel very relaxed. Nothing fazed her and she kept in regular contact with me through the whole process. This really is the first time I feel as though a recruitment consultant has not spun me a line or tried to 'sell' a role to me. She knew her client very well, which really helped me to pitch myself correctly at interview stage. Alex really 'gets it' and more importantly, really gets people, which is instrumental in this business. Alex has been a star and I hope we can work together again at some point.
After applying to a role online, I got a pleasant call from Stephen and straight from the off I could tell that Stephen had read through my CV and was invested in me. Stephen sorted my interviews impeccably and guided me fully throughout the whole process. I would fully recommend Stephen and thank him for all his help!
